Before you became a teacher, you were a student — just like those you teach today.

Before you became a teacher, you were a student — just like those you teach today. But as Brenda Hernandez from Nevada Learning Academy shares sometimes we need a reminder of what it’s like to be a student.

“We want to make sure our courses are quality courses. So we are putting our staff through QM’s Teaching Online Certificate (TOC) workshops to make sure they are trained in online learning and to remind them of what it’s like to be in the learner’s shoes.”

Part of that effort is to remind staff of what students need — higher cognitive learning and alignment with assessments and activities — some key takeaways Brenda gained during the TOC Connecting Learning Theories to Your Teaching Strategies workshop.

The TOC workshops not only help you see things from the learner’s perspective but, as Brenda explains, also provide you with the opportunity to examine and fine-tune the details of your course.

“The workshops made me think differently when I assess and review our courses. I’m about fun as a world language teacher. Students should have fun when learning. But fun has a time and place. It’s just as important to produce a quality rich content experience for the students.”
